Patrick: Best Of The Fest

Sakanaction put on my favorite show of Fuji Rock 2012

Sakanaction put on my favorite show of Fuji Rock 2012

This year’s Fuji Rock Festival was also my first trip out to Naeba ever, so I had a lot to take in over the three days. It could be at times overwhelming, but ultimately I’ve fashioned a top-five list out of my experience.

1. Sakanaction – A thrilling set mixing electronic dance sounds with traditional rock structures, all courtesy of one of the best bands in Japan today. What really pushed this one over the top for me, though, was the crowd – they were totally into it from the get-go, and the atmosphere was electric all the way until the triumphant closer “Rookie.” Read my original review here.

2. Radiohead – The Stone Roses and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds cruised on nostalgia, most people I talked to saying how “great” it was to see the prior group after so many years broken up without offering much comment on the music while everyone I talked to about the latter just said “they played some Oasis songs, cool!” Radiohead played some hits too – “Paranoid Android” as closer, don’t mind if I do – but the bulk of their headlining set focused on skittery cuts from last year’s The King Of Limbs, and they even worked in a new song that could be released on London’s Hyperdub label. Radiohead remain focused on the future, and that was inspiring to hear Sunday night. Read Elliott’s review here.

3. Cloud Nothings – Best set to shout along to choruses all weekend long. Also, solid mosh-pit action. Read my review here.

4. The Beauty – Tokyo outfit The Beauty played their first live show ever at Fuji Rock and everything went well. Part of the reason this mid-day set stands out was the scenery – they played at the Day Dreaming stage, which offered gorgeous views of the mountains, a great visual compliment to the group’s dreamy music. Read my review here.

5. Galactic – A fun way to start Sunday. To quote Corey Henry, “fuck yeah.” Read my review here.

Radiohead: Out with the old, in with the new

THOM YORKE & CO. DELIVERED LITTLE BY LITTLE

THOM YORKE & CO. DELIVERED LITTLE BY LITTLE

The Radiohead that closed Fuji Rock on the Green Stage this year was probably not the Radiohead that most fans came to see. There were no extended sing-alongs to “The Bends”-era anthems such as “Fake Plastic Trees” or “Street Spirit (Fade Out),” and I could probably count the number of lighters that were held up during the entire two-hour set on a few dozen hands. Instead, Thom Yorke & Co. produced a performance that was arguably more intelligent than the one they delivered at Bonnaroo in June, shunning their older material in favor of a set list that was stacked with highly technical arrangements from their last two albums.

Opening the show with “Lotus Flower,” the outfit from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, delivered a version of the first single from “The King of Limbs” that was ultra-heavy on the electronics, and featured a hitherto unheard keyboard section that struck me right between the eyes. It was a beginning that brought with it an extra large dollop of expectation… Continue Reading…

Sit down. Stand up. Buy tickets.

LIFE IN A GLASSHOUSE WITH THOM YORKE AND CO.

LIFE IN A GLASSHOUSE WITH THOM YORKE AND CO.

Thinking of coming to Fuji Rock on Sunday to see Radiohead close the 2012 edition of the festival on a high note? Well, the bad news is that you won’t be able to drive there by car without a ticket: the one-day parking tickets for Sunday have sold out.

The good news is that one-day tickets for Sunday and three-day tickets for the entire festival are still available but we’ve been told that they’re close to selling out. Our advice: Get in quick to avoid disappointment.

The Fuji Rock homepage has also updated its information regarding the last-day availability of tickets at various outlets around the country (Lawson, Pia, e-Plus, Gan-Ban, HMV, Tsutaya etc).

See here for all the gory details.

In other news, the schedule for the free shuttle bus to/from JR Echigo-yuzawa Station has been released. Free shuttle buses will be available to and from JR Echigo-yuzawa Station for all ticket holders from noon on Thursday through noon on Monday.

The shuttle buses depart Echigo-yuzawa Station from noon until midnight on Thursday, and from 06:00 until midnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The shuttle buses depart Naeba Bus Terminal outside the entrance to the festival from 13:00 until 01:00 on Thursday, from 07:00 until 02:00 on Friday, from 05:00 until 02:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and from 05:00 until noon on Monday.

See here for the full shuttle bus schedule.

See here for more information about getting to/from the festival.

Rolling Out The Big Guns Early

Radiohead's Thom Yorke on the Green Stage in 2010

Radiohead's Thom Yorke on the Green Stage in 2010

While the first wave of Fuji Rock acts are usually announced in early March, seeing as how Smash broke from tradition and revealed headliners The Stones Roses back in November it’s not that surprising that today they released the news that Radiohead will also be headlining FRF ‘12.

This will be Radiohead’s first time to play at FRF.  Frontman Thom Yorke performed on the Green Stage at 2010’s fest with his Atoms for Peace side project.  Reviews of that show were mixed, but I’m guessing a proper Radiohead will draw mass accolades from rain slicker sporting scribes and fans alike.

So we’ve got Radiohead and The Stone Roses on board already for FRF ‘12.  Who’s your guess for the fest’s third headliner?

Jamie Cullum, Rockin’ The Mic Like A Man From The Catskills

Jaime Cullum

Jaime Cullum

The first thought that popped into my head as I approached the Green Stage Saturday afternoon and heard a vocal wafting through the trees was “damn, that kid does have a good set of pipes”. It caught me unawares, and you can’t deny your subconscious when that happens. (Blink bitch, blink!) Cullum’s voice has got the silky, it’s got the grit, and it spreads like apple butter.

He and his band were a five-piece this time (last time he was at Fuji it was as a trio), with upright bass and drums, and variously percussion (congas), horns, and Rhodes keyboard, with Cullum on piano.

Although he didn’t stay there. He was up and down the whole show, and I hate to throw sewage on his sundae, Continue Reading…

An Early Gift From Massive Attack!

ThomYorke

Yesterday, Massive Attack put a poster for this summer’s Fuji Rock Festival on their official site.

The poster lists what day each act will perform on and also has some new artist additions.  The most notable of these is Atoms For Peace, the side project from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke that also includes Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Nigel Godrich (Radiohead producer), Joey Waronker (R.E.M., Smashing Pumpkins, Beck), and Mauro Refosco.

Although no announcement has been made by Fuji Rock promoter Smash yet, the poster looks official (and bears a strong resemblance to past FRF adverts) so I imagine all the info is legit and will be properly revealed soon.

The Fuji Rock Festival poster from Massive Attack is here.

A review of Atoms For Peace’s recent Coachella performance is here and their setlist from said concert is here.
