Pop Rocks: Miike Snow Pump It Up

Miike Snow frontman, Andrew Wyatt

Miike Snow frontman, Andrew Wyatt

Whether they’re working with Madonna, Kylie or Britney, it’s hard to disagree that Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg make very successful pop. But as, Miike Snow, their most recent project, the Swedish duo’s production cred can only take them so far. This is live music after all. I was curious how they could incorporate Amercian singer Andrew Wyatt into their knob twiddling and turn it all into something crowds will jump up an down for. They certainly succeeded, but it took a few songs to connect.

FRF Staff picks: JINKI

FRF_crowdBelow you’ll find some of my music recommendations, but first off, a few nuggets of advice:

What to remember:

- Don’t forget sun protection (hat, extra sunglasses and sunblock). And if you use them like I do, bring your own genki drinks for an added late-night boost. Despite all the stalls at Fujirock, I’ve only rarely seen these on sale.

- Walk the entire length of the fest grounds at least once. That’s right: from the Red Marquee all the way to Cabaret Fiesta and back. At sunset or after dark is best, and make sure to take the boardwalk. Try not to look at your watch. You’ll be glad you did.

- Take the Dragondola up to the Day Dreaming stage at the top of the mountain, even if you just turn around and come back. The view, the fresh air and thrity minutes off your feet will do you good.

What to see:

Trying to point out a handful of shows at Fujirock is like recommending only one dish at your favorite restaurant: the entire menu is delicious, but you only have so much room in your stomach. It’s a foregone conclusion that bands like LCD Sound System, Broken Social Scene and One Day as a Lion will be mind-blowingly great live experiences, so I’ll try to point out some of lineup further down the marquee:

REVIEW: MIIKE SNOW “THE RABBIT” VIDEO DECONSTRUCTED

2 live crew cover OK, so the plot of this video, released about a month ago on June 3, goes something like this: a young Jamaican boy, who has a full beard and might actually be a midget or a drwarf, lives in a tin-roofed shack with a group of chickens, goats, a white rabbit and four supermodel dancehall queens, and oh, they also keep a three-legged bulldog in the yard. For fun, this modern family shoots their crossbow at a junked refrigerator, works out with cinder blocks, stands around looking very fashionable and blase, and before long they all say fuck it and start doing crazy dancehall moves in the living room. At this point, you are probably wondering why the lead image here is the cover of 2 Live Crew’s 1989 album As Nasty As They Wanna Be. Well, I’m getting to that, and it’s not just because I’m a huge fan of Luther Campbell, a.k.a. Luke Skyywalker, or at least we could still call him that before the lawsuit: Georgge Luucas may you burn in hell. Continue Reading…

Human Cannonball & Wheel of Death

Human Cannonball and Wheel of Death

Quietly slipping in under the radar the other day (Don Coglione’s Crystal Palace update notwithstanding) have been some minor tweaks to the Fuji Rock 2010 line-up.

The complete Palace of Wonder, Gypsy Avalon, Day Dreaming and Silent Breeze details have been scheduled, as have announcements for the death spectacle that is the Palace Arena, Fischerspooner at All Night Fuji, and DJ Alexis from Hot Chip added to Sunday night’s Red Marquee lineup. THE NAME IS MIIKE SNOW

Miike Snow

Miike Snow

And I know that you pronounce their name as “Mike Snow” because I heard them say it themselves in this brief interview clip here.

Go figure. They’re cool Swedish guys. Well, two thirds of them, at least. There is a cool American singer/songwriter involved, as well. And when you’re cool, you drop cool names like Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike (the controversial director of Ichi the Killer), or at least you borrow cool romaji versions of Japanese names who you then say influenced your moniker.
