I broke up with Wilco a long time ago. It wasn’t easy because I fell hard for the early stuff, especially Uncle Tupelo and albums like “A.M.” and even the screechy, fuzzy brilliance of “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.”
Losing Jay Bennett was just too much for me to take. I almost forgot about them entirely until a little tweet on NPR’s All Songs Considered read something like “Wilco, best set ever at Sasquatch.” This stirred some interest in my long-dead heart. Were they back? Or was this some heartless industry publicist trying to sell a few albums?
When they were announced at Fuji Rock, my heart really began to swing; do I give them the cold shoulder and check out a hotter, younger act, or do I swallow my pride and join the other Tweedy-faithful legions.
I did some research, checking out what my friends thought (many shared my prior ambivalence) and even checked out that Sasquatch broadcast which started it all. Then I read a thoughtful review by a pal who wrote for this website. He pretty much nailed the whole show, faithfully recording the snippy banter between Tweedy and the audience, the tumbling feedback and distortion of their 2 hour set, and even predicted they’d soon play Fuji Rock.
It was obvious that he was back with the band again, so what was my problem? Getting those old CDs may take some time, but to tell you the truth, ” Being There” probably made all the difference.
