Japandroids Live at SXSW 2010
My exact reaction when I saw Japandroids name in the new lineup additions for FRF ’12 was “Holy sh#t! Japandroids are coming.” And in the three weeks since then, my excitement about seeing the fuzzed-out Vancouver rock duo hasn’t waned one bit.
I was lucky enough to catch the act perform during SXSW in 2010 and they were fan-frickin’-tastic live. Playing to a packed room in Austin, Texas, guitarist Brian King started the band’s set by shouting, “Let’s have a f#cking good time and go nuts!” And then that’s exactly what he, drummer David Prowse, and the very riled up audience proceeded to do.
At the time, Japandroids were touring behind their awesome, highly acclaimed “Post-Nothing” debut. Fuji Rock marks the pair’s first visit to Nippon and they’ll be plugging their newly issued “Celebration Rock” sophomore effort. Equally revered as “Post-Nothing,” “Celebration Rock” was recently ranked first on MTV’s “The Best Albums Of 2012 (So Far)” and last week Stereogum chose “Celebration Rock” single “The House That Heaven Built” as the “Indie Song of the Summer 2012.”
Japandroids play in the Red Marquee on Sunday, July 29 from 11:30 am – 12:10 pm. And while most fest-goers will likely be up very, very late on Saturday, do yourself a favour and make sure you’re up early for this one. Trust me, Japandroids’ rowdy rock anthems will quickly get rid of any cobwebs lingering in your head from the night before. After they are done wowing you, you’ll be energized and raring to go for Sunday’s stacked lineup of musical goodness.
Here’s how the New York Times’ described Japandroids’ concerts in their review of the band’s June NYC gig:
“The performances of this two-piece outfit from Vancouver are like little punkish quakes, powerful and destabilizing. Of recent two-member bands — from the White Stripes to the Black Keys to No Age and more — Japandroids have by far the most exuberant, affirming live show.”

Yup. Ridiculously excited to see Japandroids on Sunday. Assuming I get tickets that is. Anyhoo, watched streams of their live performances and played the new album about a hundred times in the last few months. House was song of the year after about 15 seconds of it being laid on my ears. Let’s all have fun at this one!
