Beams bag symbolizing unity and strength after the earthquake

Anyone who has ever been to the Fuji Rock festival will be able to attest to the fact that the Japanese are the most prepared people in the world when it comes to outdoor activities. Not only are they prepared, bringing every manner of clothing, food and drink preparation equipment, tents, chairs and other leisure goods, but the stuff that they bring is ultra trendy. Making a wonderful contribution to the fashion end of Fuji is the excellent Japanese clothing brand/shop Beams. They have a long history (going all the way back to 2004) with the festival often making clothes and official merchandise for Fuji Rockers as well as clothing for the volunteers and other staff. This year, their collection of T-shirts is definitely worth mentioning because not only are they very cool but they are also for charity. Seeing as this is the 8th year they have been affiliated with the festival, Beams have put together 8 designs especially for this year’s event. 5 of the shirts were done by The Wonderful! design works, another 2 by a Frenchman who goes by the name of SO_ME and one was designed by Mitsuro Kubo, creator of the well known comic book series “Moteki,” which was recently made into a movie. While it is important to look like a hipster, what is far more important is to help other people and the environment. Beams have designed a special Fuji Rock shopping bag this year using images of the rising sun from the Japanese flag, a pair of hands clasped together and a traditional Japanese form of Japanese cord tying called Mizuhiki in the form of guitar necks. The images on the bag symbolize the strength of the bond between people and the wish that Fuji Rock will be able to unite the audience and artists in such a way that will be like a prayer for all those have suffered and died in the earthquake and tsunami in March. It is not only the design that is supporting the earthquake relief efforts, but a percentage of the Fuji Rock T-Shirt sales will be going to Smash’s Benefit for Nippon Fund. Also, Beams, together with Tower Records continues to help make Fuji Rock as ecologically sustainable as possible, donating money to the New Power Gear and Fuji Rock Forest projects.
