Kaisokutokyo Flying High At 3 a.m.
Hanging out in the Palace Of Wonder late Saturday gave me a chance to check out much of the night’s Rookie A Go-Go roster and see what the newbies are up to.
Although their music wasn’t bad, I was no where near as impressed with Taiwan’s Go Chic, the first non-Japan based act to play the area, as Jeff was.
Higurashi Records Inc. ska and reggae-infused tunes didn’t really do it for me either, but others seemed happy and the act definitely have a sound and vibe that could win over the Field Of Heaven faithful.
I thought Uchujin’s experimental pop was cool, but they weren’t overly interesting to watch. Standing nearly completely still, their vocalist’s timid shtick wore thin quickly. Their English bio at Rookie A Go-Go stated that they were “A band promising to be careful not to be too intrusive during their performance on stage.” While I can respect them sticking to their word, come 2 a.m. in the morning I personally need something a little livelier.
Closers Kaisokutokyo, were my tops in mind. Jeff and I were hanging by the Crystal Palace Tent when they kicked into their opening noisy cut. Within seconds we were on the move to check them out with a passing girl miming that it was just screaming making us walk even faster. The Tokyo quartet tore through their face paced rockers while jumping around on stage. Their high pitched wailer of a vocalist put an early end to their concert when he jum into the crowd with his mic still in his hand and the lead broke off. What we saw was more than enough to win us over, though, and Jeff and I both bought the group’s disc with many other spectators following suit.
