Go Chic
Or so they claim. The three gals from Taiwan (and a drummer guy that smacks out their straight ahead rock beats) opened Saturday night’s Rookie A Go-Go stage with an energetic dance pop set that had more than a few people braving the rain to see them. People like me.
I don’t know if I would call them “electro-punk” (as Shawn suggested) but their simple three chord rock with keyboard samples and dance loops certainly had some punk energy that had the small stage rawkin’ and the crowd calling out their name (well, not really calling out their name but asking their name). While they don’t break any new ground musically, Go Chic’s performance is highly infectious. Their stab at taking the piss out of pop culture verges on cliche (song dedications to Britney and Lindsey Lohan with lyrics like, “Suck suck suck a dick / make make make me rich” have been semi-rapped in form or another for decades), but their all out enthusiasm for what they’re doing on stage makes it work.
They love to get the crowd worked up and dancing, with the cat-like lead singer strutting and prancing about on stage in her pink tights, silver lame shirt and bare ass feet trying to connect with each member of the crowd. She dedicated “24 Hour Party Pooper” to those that wouldn’t bounce up and down to their groove, and donned her gum boots to run out into the crowd and get a little party mosh going with them.
The RAGG stage can be pretty hit and miss, but this was definitely a hit (as was Kaisoukou Toukyo who closed the same stage later). Two thumbs up and one CD purchased.
They’ll be playing a show in Tokyo with Vola and The Oriental Machine on Tuesday at Fever Shindaita and another one on the 6th at Shinjuku Jam.
I liked them. You should too on their Facebook page and find out more about their upcoming shows in Japan, China and Canada.
