Honky Tonkin'

Honky Tonkin'

Ladies & gentlemen, meet the coolest family alive. The Kitty, Daisy and Lewis of this eponymously-titled band leave out two essential members: their parents. Mom plays upright bass, Dad plays guitar, and the three teens switch between drums, guitar, harmonica, banjo, accordion and vocals. The result is a rootsy, honky-tonkin’ rock show that may be my favorite gig so far.

With its wooden dance floor and carnival atmosphere, the Crystal Palace was the perfect venue for this truck stop attraction of a show. Packed with hundreds of sweaty revelers, the place was hotter than a chicken shack under the July sun, but that didn’t stop the crowd from jumping and jiving. Sisters Kitty and Daisy, with their hair in 50’s styles, set just so, opened the set with an a cappella tune accompanied by handclaps from the crowd. Soon after brother Lewis and Dad arrive, put out their smokes and take the stage, Mama-bass following along.

After a few rockabilly and hillbilly numbers, the family switched it up and brought out Eddie “Tan Tan” Thornton, the legendary Jamaican trumpet player, and then broke into a short detour by way of Kingston. WTF?

Then came the single from their last album “Going to the Country,” which set the crowd on fire. Swing dancers tried to do their thing but the place was just too packed, but no one seemed to mind the occasional bump. By the end the crowd was begging for more old school sounds, which came via the records of DJ Baby Soul, who was up next.
