Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro at FRF '08

After witnessing Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro’s FRF debut in the spectacular Crystal Palace Tent in 2008, our own Don Coglione proclaimed, “This is a band on the rise and you’ll see them back on a bigger stage before too long.” Proving Mr. Coglione right, this year the Saitama sextet will be tearing things up in the Field Of Heaven with funky instrumental cuts from their 2008 eponymous effort and this January’s excellent “Uhuru Peak.”

2010 is shaping up to be a banner year for these dapper looking funksters.  Along with making a return to FRF, in January they did a three-week Australian tour.  I happened to be  in Melbourne to witness one of my best bud’s fantastic wedding at the time and was hoping to catch MMK’s lively, upbeat performance, but unfortunately had to fly out a dozen or so hours before they took to the stage at the city’s well known concert venue, The Esplanade Hotel.  My whole trip to Australia was fantastic, but I think closing it out with a set of tight grooves from MMK would have made it even better.

Australians were obviously very impressed with MMK because later this month, the band are being brought back for three night’s worth of gigs at the 10th annual Adelaide Cabaret Festival which should get them good and primed for their FRF appearance on August 1.  The group are also scheduled to play at Fukuoka’s Sunset Live fest in early September.

Photos from MMK’s set at the Crystal Palace Tent in 2008 are here and Don Coglione’s above mentioned words are here.

My Japan Times review of “Uhuru Peak” is here.

Here’s the music video for the most fantastic “(Ain’t Got Nobody) Just a Rambling Man” from “”Uhuru Peak.”
