Belle & Sebastian

Belle & Sebastian

It’s been a while to hear from our Glaswegian friends in Belle & Sebastian: their last album came out four years ago and touring has been limited since. But with a new album and global tour in the works, it appears that the hills of Naeba will be alive with twee, indie pop (Twindypop? Oh I am so coining that word right now).

In other news, the band is reuniting with its origins in the form of curating All Tomorrow’s Parties in December, a festival that was inspired by their own “Bowlie Weekender” event in 1999. Then there’s “God Help the Girl” an upcoming movie and soundtrack put together by B&S frontman, Stuart Murdoch (interview here). And now after a four-year hiatus (kinda), the band’s back and on the road.

I must admit that before I saw them perform, I’d thought they’d be a bore live. Sure, their music is great on record, but I was afraid that the dreamy, dulcet tones of Murdoch and company would just put me to sleep. Happy to say that they are a lot of fun in the flesh, and an ideal mellow band to finish off the White Stage Sunday night. The name Belle & Sebastian may sound like a duet (their name actually comes from this), but the band in its live form is quite large – half a dozen to a dozen, playing every variety of instruments that are plucked (guitars, violins, etc) or pounded (keys, various percussion). This live sound retains the original warmth, but adds a thin, sinister edge to all those pink puffy clouds that seem to permeate their sound. See here.
